A 70-year-old man who tried to cross Route 50 on Maryland's Eastern Shore was fatally injured Friday when he was struck by a car driven by a Maryland state trooper, state police said.

Police said James H. White Jr., who had been staying at a Queenstown motel, and had no fixed address, was struck about 9:15 a.m. in the Queenstown area by a department-issued car driven by 1st Sgt. Livingston Banks.

Police said a preliminary investigation indicated that White stepped from a traffic island at Hissey Road and Route 50 directly into traffic and that the trooper could not avoid him.

Pedestrians are not permitted on the roadway in that area, police said. The site is about 10 miles east of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

Police said Banks has been on the force for 25 years and is assigned to the automotive safety enforcement division.

In another fatal traffic incident, D.C. police said a 23-year-old District man was killed late Wednesday in a motor scooter crash.

Lino Montiel of Tuckerman Street NW was thrown from his scooter when it jumped a curb at 16th and Emerson streets NW and struck a light pole, police said.
