VMI freshman dies after 10-mile march

A 19-year-old freshman at the Virginia Military Institute collapsed and died Saturday after a 10-mile road march, school officials said.

John Alexander Evans of Highland, Md., collapsed in his room after completing the training exercise with members of his class. He was pronounced dead shortly after noon at a hospital. Evans was an international studies major and a member of the Marine ROTC program.

Officials said the cause of death will be determined by a medical examiner.

Police investigate Fairfax hit-and-run

Fairfax County police are looking for the driver of a Chrysler with a missing driver's-side mirror after an Annandale man was struck in a hit-and-run late Friday night.

The 41-year-old victim, taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital with life-threatening injuries, was hit at 9 p.m. near Annandale Road and Farr Street. A second vehicle, a 2009 Honda Accord, also hit the man, but the 62-year-old driver stayed at the scene. The department's crash reconstruction unit is investigating.
