A District man was killed early Monday when he was struck by a car on Route 5 in the Suitland area, police said.

Lawrence Bettis Jr., 37, of the 1600 block of Fort Davis Street SE was walking across Route 5 near Old Branch Avenue when he was struck by a PT Cruiser traveling north, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred about 2:15 a.m., police said.

It is not clear why Bettis was walking in the road, police said. The driver remained at the scene after the crash and was not charged with a crime.
