MERGERS & ACQUISITIONS
Europeans object to Oracle purchase of Sun
The European Commission has objected on competitive grounds to Oracle's proposed $7.4 billion takeover of Sun Microsystems, splitting from U.S. regulators who have already blessed the deal. Oracle, the world's largest maker of database software, said the commission found that Oracle's acquistion of Sun's MySQL database software would harm competition. Oracle said it would "vigorously oppose" the commission's objections.
The Justice Department approved the merger in August without any conditions. Deputy Assistant Attorney General Molly Boast said in a statement Monday that the deal was "unlikely to be anticompetitive." The Obama administration has vowed a tougher stance on antitrust matters.
