Three men shot at a car in the District early Monday, then fired toward a police car before fleeing into Virginia, D.C police said.
Police said three suspects were arrested and charged with assault with intent to kill in connection with the incident that began a few minutes before 3 a.m. in t he 5800 block of East Capitol Street SE, in the eastern end of the District.
Police said officers patrolling in that area saw occupants of one car fire at a second. It was not clear whether anyone was hit. A man later showed up at a hospital with an apparent gunshot wound and police said they were investigating to determine whether he was in the car.
Police said the officers who witnessed the incident were not hit and their cruiser was undamaged.
The gunment's car got away and drove into Virginia, but returned to the District, where three men were taken into custody near Interstate 295 and the Malcolm X Avenue exit, police said.
Those arrested were idenified as Jonathan Ray, 21, Benjamin Freeman, 20, and Shamrad Shorter, 19. All were charged with assault with intent to kill, police said.
