A Giant Food store in Montgomery County was evacuated Tuesday after people inside reported smelling gas and becoming sick, officials said.

Almost 50 firefighters were at the store at 7919 Tuckerman Lane in the Potomac area as of 2 p.m., said Capt. Oscar Garcia, a spokesman for the county's Fire and Rescue Service. Paramedics evaluated about 14 people. Six were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, Garcia said.

Firefighters, who were first called to the store shortly before 1:20 p.m., called in a hazardous materials team. Four businesses were evacuated as a precaution, Garcia said. Officials were looking into a possible gas or refrigerant leak but didn't know the source of the smell, he said.

The store was later declared safe.
