Traffic diverted on southbound GW Parkway

Some debris has fallen from an overpass at the Roosevelt Bridge onto the George Washington Parkway's southbound side following an accident. That is forcing all the parkway's southbound traffic to divert onto Route 50 or the Roosevelt Bridge.

No other movement is blocked. Northbound traffic on the parkway does not appear to be affected. Normally, a problem like this on a major commuter route like the parkway would ripple out quickly and congest roads over a wide area, but at the moment, traffic on the other roads near the river seems relatively good for this time of day. The Key Bridge looks fine, as do the roads in Rosslyn.

Farther south, at the junction of I-395 and the parkway, traffic can go either north or south on the parkway. In fact, traffic at the moment is relatively light around the 14th Street Bridge, probably because of the holiday.

Across the Potomac from the GW Parkway, there's two-way traffic today on Canal Road, also because of the holiday. That's not necessarily a good thing. Some drivers are telling me that it's confusing, because some motorists are unaware of the holiday rules and are moving into the wrong lanes.

Across the region, the rain in the twilight, sometimes combined with falling leaves, is causing the most problems for drivers.
