A motorist was killed in Fairfax County on Friday night when he attempted to cross from one side of the Dulles connector to the other, Virginia state police said.
They said the man, who was believed to be in his late 50s, was headed east when he turned onto an emergency crossover in an apparent attempt to reach the westbound lanes. His car was struck just east of Route 123 by a westbound vehicle, a state police spokesman said.
The incident occurred about 6 p.m. and shut down the connector for about 3 1/2 hours.
