Colts surge to late win after Pats gamble fails

INDIANAPOLIS (Reuters) - The Indianapolis Colts capitalized on a failed gamble by the New England Patriots to retain their unbeaten record with a stunning 35-34 comeback victory in the dying seconds on Sunday. Clinging to a 34-28 lead with the ball on their own 28 and just over two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Patriots coach Bill Belichick opted for a fourth-down play instead of a punt but came up short, turning the ball over to the Colts.

Bengals beat Steelers to take control of AFC North

PITTSBURGH (Reuters) - Bernard Scott raced 96 yards with a kickoff return as the surprising Cincinnati Bengals took control of the AFC North Division with an 18-12 victory over the NFL defending champions Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. Scott's run was the game's only touchdown in Cincinnati's (7-2) second win over Pittsburgh (6-3) this season.

Suns squeeze by Raptors to remain perfect at home

PHOENIX (Reuters) - Steve Nash completed a three-point play in the closing seconds to give the Phoenix Suns a 101-100 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Sunday as Phoenix managed to maintain their unbeaten home record. Nash scored 23 points and had nine assists but his most telling contribution came with 38.9 seconds remaining, when he tied the score at 100-100 on a driving layup and added the winning free throw off a Jose Calderon foul on the play.

Michelle Wie claims first pro tour win

GUADALAJARA, Mexico (Reuters) - Michelle Wie broke through for her first professional tour victory on Sunday, winning the LPGA Lorena Ochoa Invitational by two strokes over fellow American Paula Creamer. The 20-year-old Hawaiian, who first qualified for an LPGA event when she was 12, closed with a three-under par 69 for a 13-under 275 total to collect a $220,000 cheque.

Blackhawks tame Sharks with quick overtime goal

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Brent Seabrook scored 41 seconds into overtime and the Chicago Blackhawks edged the San Jose Sharks 4-3 on Sunday to boost their home winning streak to seven games. Brent Sopel, Patrick Kane and John Madden also had goals for the Blackhawks, who overcame a 3-1 deficit to win the clash of Western Conference division leaders.

Canada's Ames wins Disney Classic after playoff

MIAMI (Reuters) - Canadian Stephen Ames won the Disney Classic on Sunday after triumphing in a three-way sudden death playoff with George McNeill and Justin Leonard at Lake Buena Vista, Florida. Leonard was close to winning the tournament on the final hole. He needed a birdie to clinch the victory but his 16-foot birdie putt spun out of the cup to send the event into a playoff.
