Steven Chalk: Chief operating officer, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy at the Department of Energy.

Best known for: Helping to develop clean-energy technologies, including in hydrogen fuel, solar energy and building technologies.

Government service: Chalk began his government career 26 years ago, as a civilian designing rocket motors and propellants for the Navy. He joined the Energy Department in 1990 to work on nuclear weapons technologies before moving to renewable energy programs, such as exploring the use of solar and hydrogen energy for buildings.

Biggest challenge: Managing a staff flooded with work generated by stimulus money.

Quote: "This is the biggest opportunity in the clean-energy field in 30 years, and the best time to work at the Department of Energy. We finally have the resources to make a huge difference, and people will start seeing that in terms of green jobs and in homes and cars during the next five years because of the stimulus funding."
