BEAUJOLAIS NOUVEAU CELEBRATION
Beaujolais nouveau is not a very good wine. It's a light, fruity French red made of gamay grapes, which are fermented only a few weeks before the bottle hits the shelves. Not the kind of thing you'd make a fuss over or even order at a restaurant. And yet, there will be hundreds of people trying to get into Bistrot du Coin on Wednesday night in the hope of tasting the brand-new 2009 vintage.
Why? Blame the French government. By law, Beaujolais nouveau can't be sold before the third Thursday in November. As a result, restaurants and bars around the world stay open late and throw midnight parties. At Bistrot du Coin, it means DJs, tables moved out for a dance floor and bartenders pouring unlimited free cups of wine. Be sure to arrive on the early side, or you'll spend a long time waiting outdoors.
11 p.m. Wednesday. 1738 Connecticut Ave. NW. 202-234-6969. Admission and wine free.
