Metro opens garage at Minnesota Avenue

A new parking garage is scheduled to open at 5 a.m. Monday at the Minnesota Avenue station on Metro's Orange Line. The four-level, $16 million structure holds 333 vehicles and replaces a surface parking lot with the same number of spaces, according to Metro.

Spaces in the garage, built by the District, are closer to the station entrance via sidewalk, according to Metro. Construction of the garage began in January 2006.

Fire at Northeast lot destroys school bus

A public school bus parked at a District of Columbia lot was destroyed Sunday by a fire that appears to have started accidentally, officials said. Two buses parked nearby were also damaged.

Just before 11 a.m., firefighters were called to the lot at New York Avenue and Kendall Street NE. They found the front of a mid-size school bus engulfed in flames. Firefighters controlled the fire quickly, but the bus was declared a total loss. No injuries were reported. A fire department spokesman said the fire was "possibly mechanical in nature."
