A taste of European film without the expense of a plane ticket, the 22nd annual AFI European Union Film Showcase highlights dozens of films from E.U. countries, featuring big names (Heath Ledger and Philip Seymour Hoffman) and a variety of genres. The must-see French film this weekend is "Henri-Georges Clouzot's Inferno," a documentary that assembles the footage of the aborted 1964 project of the same name about a man who suspects his younger wife is cheating on him. (Because it's a French film, paranoia and cigarettes are the main dramatic motifs. I kid, French film fanatics!) The doc was part of the 2009 Cannes, Toronto and New York Film festivals and includes experimental shots and interviews with crew members.
