Pedestrian, 63, fatally struck by car

A 63-year-old man was fatally struck by a car late Wednesday as he tried to cross a Silver Spring street, Montgomery County police said.

The victim, identified only as a Silver Spring man, was hit as he tried to cross the northbound lanes of 16th Street near Colesville Road just before 6 p.m., said officer Melanie Brenner, a police spokeswoman.

The man was taken to Washington Hospital Center, where died.

A 47-year-old Gaithersburg man was driving the black 2002 Mercedes-Benz C320 that struck the man, police said.

It was not clear whether the pedestrian was in a crosswalk at the time.

Public can comment on bus pass fares

The public will get to weigh in this month on a proposal from Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett to raise the cost of a Ride On monthly bus pass from $25 to $30 beginning Jan. 1.

The monthly pass provides unlimited use of Ride On buses. The increase is one of several actions proposed by Leggett (D) to help the county offset a $370 million budget shortfall next year, officials said in a news release.

People can comment on the proposal at a public meeting at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 1 in the third-floor hearing room of the Council Office Building at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville. Speakers must register by calling 240-777-7803 by 5 p.m. Nov. 24.
