A 63-year-old man was fatally struck by a car late Wednesday as he tried to cross a Silver Spring street, Montgomery County police said.

The victim, identified only as a Silver Spring man, was hit as he tried to cross the northbound lanes of 16th Street near Colesville Road just before 6 p.m., said officer Melanie Brenner, a police spokeswoman.

The man was taken to Washington Hospital Center, where died.

A 47-year-old Gaithersburg man was driving the black 2002 Mercedes-Benz C320 that struck the man, police said. It was not clear whether the pedestrian was in a crosswalk at the time.
