Sure, Washington is a city with holiday traditions, but New Year's Eve takes the season to another level. Legendary jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal has rung in the new year more than two dozen times at Blues Alley, and it just wouldn't seem like December 31 if swing chanteuse Peaches O'Dell weren't at the Black Cat.
At the same time, the people behind the city's large black-tie-optional hotel parties are always looking for ways to shake things up and draw new crowds. The popular young professionals group Things to Do D.C. is moving its annual multi-ballroom event from the Wardman Park Marriott to the historic Willard Hotel on Pennsylvania Avenue, and the Brightest Young Things group is taking over the Capitol Skyline Hotel, where it held weekly pool parties this summer. (Many hotels offer discounted rooms for attendees.)
If you're thinking about New Year's Eve, here's an early guide to some of the biggest concerts and events. If you weren't thinking about New Year's Eve, perhaps it's time (yes, already). Tickets for these events are on sale now, and in some cases -- particularly with hotel parties -- they will get more expensive as the date draws near.
