-- An Associated Press item on the Nov. 18 Washington Business page described 1,000 Washington area job cuts at Verizon as layoffs. The AP issued a correction saying that a Verizon spokesman had confirmed layoffs were occurring but that the spokesman later said Verizon has a "surplus" of employees in the area and is giving people a chance to leave voluntarily through buyouts. The spokesman said layoffs could follow if necessary.
