How to volunteer at Washington area airports

All three Washington area airports provide volunteer opportunities at their information desks. Candidates should have a fondness for airports and a knack with travel-related questions, concerns and conundrums. Orientation is required; perks include free parking and discounts at on-site concessions.

Reagan National and Washington Dulles

Travelers Aid (202-546-1127, http://www.travelersaid.org) runs the outposts at the two Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority facilities. For information on volunteering at Washington Dulles, call 703-572-7350 or e-mail volunteer@mwaa.com; for Reagan National, call 703-417-3975 or e-mail ann.stretch@mwaa.com. Volunteering requires a commitment of at least two three-hour shifts a month.

BWI Marshall

With Pathfinders, nearly 180 volunteers staff customer service desks throughout the airport. The program is at capacity but may resume taking on new volunteers next summer. A commitment of four hours per week is suggested. Info: 410-859-7826, http://www.bwiairport.com/en/service/guest.
