Geocache draws bomb squad
When a Loudoun County sheriff's deputy stumbled upon a green ammunition can hidden in a Sterling drainage pipe, he did the right thing: He called the bomb squad. The bomb techs opened the box and found a few trinkets, a notebook and a pen. It wasn't an ammo box -- it was one of about 939,000 active "geocaches" worldwide. Geocaching is a game in which players use Global Positioning System devices to track down containers at coordinates posted on a Web site.

Planned deer hunts stir opposition
Planned deer hunts in two Fairfax County public parks are riling animal rights advocates and residents who say the county's new bowhunting program to cull deer is inhumane and dangerous. Before dawn Monday, a handful of archers from Suburban Whitetail Deer Management of Northern Virginia, a nonprofit volunteer deer hunting group, went to the Colvin Run Stream Valley and Colvin Run Mill parks and hunted deer from 20- to 30-foot-high deer stands. A homeowners association in Beacon Hill, an affluent, 200-house community in Loudoun County, began allowing residents to hunt deer with bows this fall.

Centreville man faces manslaughter charge
A Centreville man who was lighting fireworks in a moving pickup truck in July was charged with involuntary manslaughter after a friend fell from the truck and later died, Loudoun County authorities said. Sheriff's officials said Kyle A. Guthrie, 19, who was arraigned Wednesday, was riding with Dennis Ray Ross, 19, in the bed of a GMC pickup on Donegal Drive in South Riding shortly before 1 a.m. July 19.
