Fire displaced five people and caused heavy damage Saturday to the contents of a house in the American University Park neighborhood of the District, authorities said.

The contents of the detached brick house in the 4200 block of 47th Street NW were a "total loss," said Deputy Chief Ken Crosswhite, of the D.C. fire and emergency services department.

A dog died in the blaze that was reported shortly before 5 p.m.
