All that remains of Thanksgiving are leftovers and that towering stack of dishes in your sink, which means the holiday season is now officially upon us. Whether it's Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or even Festivus that you celebrate, there's one thing about the season that unites us all. No, it's not holiday shopping; we're talking about lights, those tiny purveyors of pleasing illumination and plenty of cheer. The more the better, as far as we're concerned, which is why we've compiled this list of some of the area's best large-scale lighting displays.

BULL RUN FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS Through Jan. 10. Open Monday-Thursday from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. and Friday-Sunday, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve from 5:30 to 10 p.m. The 2 1/2 -mile drive-through display features more than 75,000 lights. Monday-Thursday, cars $15, vans $25, buses $50. Friday-Sunday, cars $20, vans $30, buses $55. LIGHTS ON THE BAY Through Jan. 3 from 5 to 10 p.m. A two-mile drive-through holiday light show with more than 70 displays, with proceeds to benefit Anne Arundel Medical Center. SYMPHONY OF LIGHTS Through Jan. 3 from 6 to 10 p.m. More than 70 larger-than-life, animated and stationary light creations with proceeds to benefit Howard County General Hospital. Walk-throughs available to groups of 50 or more at $5 per person from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. Tail Lights, for dogs and their owners, is Dec. 15 from 4 to 6 p.m. Blinkin' Binkies, for parents and children 12 and younger, is Dec. 8 from 4 to 6 p.m. Symphony Woods, 10475 Little Patuxent Pkwy., Columbia. 410-740-7840. http://www.hcgh.org.
