Here's one measure of tenor saxophonist Bruce Swaim's talent and imagination. Bassist Paul Langosch, the longtime Chevy Chase resident who plays alongside Tony Bennett, devotes considerable time to collaborations with Swaim, onstage and in the studio. Here's another: "Lucky Strikes," Swaim's latest quartet album. Co-produced by Langosch, it's the best example of Swaim's full-throated assurance and winning versatility.
The choice of tunes ensures plenty of tonal contrasts and mood shifts. Contributors include Brazilian composer Ivan Lins (who inspires a soulful version of "Velas"); Cannonball Adderley (his "Spontaneous Combustion" vibrantly underscores Swaim's sound); Chick Corea (two tracks, including a brash rendition of "Captain Marvel"); and Jerome Kern (represented by the engaging jazz waltz "Up With the Lark"). To hear Swaim zip through the contours of Bud Powell's "Hallucinations," then conjure a ruminative mood on "Blame It on My Youth," is another reminder of the saxophonist's good taste.
Swaim surrounds himself with musicians who enhance his tunes. Langosch stretches out, providing supple backing and complementary solos. Much the same can be said for pianist Jay Cooley, who distinguishes himself throughout the session, and drummer Dominic Smith, who provides ample shading and sparks.
