The following organizations need volunteer help for a day, for a week or on a regular basis.
Interfaith Works seeks individuals, families, companies and civic and faith groups to participate in the Montgomery County Holiday Giving Project though donations of cash, food, gift cards and children's gift items for residents in need. Committee vacancies
Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett (D) is accepting applications for the following positions:
-- Commission on Aging, eight vacancies. Committee members advise county officials on the concerns and needs of seniors. Meetings are from 9 a.m. to noon the fourth Thursday of every month in Rockville.
-- Agricultural Advisory Committee, four vacancies. The committee advises county officials on all matters affecting agriculture in the county. Evening meetings are the third Tuesday of every month in Germantown.
-- Animal Matters Hearing Board, four vacancies. The board has hearings on complaints about animal-related nuisances and similar issues. Members attend an average of two to four meetings each month.
-- Citizens Review Panel for Children, one vacancy. The panel implements state law regarding citizen review boards and evaluates state and local agency response to child protection needs. Meetings are at least once every three months.
-- Commission on Common Ownership Communities, five vacancies. The commission advises county officials on management of common ownership of property in communities and promotes public awareness of the rights and responsibilities of residents of such communities. Meetings are the first Wednesday of each month.
-- Historic Preservation Commission, three vacancies. The commission is responsible for approving work permits in historic areas and for advising county officials on historic sites and districts. Members serve approximately 20 hours a month.
-- Sign Review Board, two vacancies. The board reviews applications and grants variances from the sign regulations of the county code. Meetings are once a month on Thursday mornings in Rockville.
-- Victim Services Advisory Board, five vacancies. The board advises county officials in matters of sexual assault, domestic violence and other crimes. Members meet the fourth Thursday of every month in Rockville.
The application deadline is Monday, except for the Victim Services Advisory Board, which is Tuesday. A cover letter and a brief résumé, including home and work phone numbers and an e-mail address, should be enclosed, detailing pertinent experience and participation in business, civic or community groups.
