Want to take a spur-of-the moment trip to Liberty University's Snowflex Centre? Here's what you need to know for the weekend of Dec. 4-6:
Lynchburg is about 165 miles from the Beltway. Take Interstate 66 west to US-29 south. South of Amherst, exit onto Amherst/US-29 Business south. Merge onto VA-163 toward Lynchburg. Turn left at Church Street, which will take you downtown.
WHERE TO STAY

Shoemakers American Grille, 1312 Commerce St., 434-455-1510, http://www.shoemakersdining.com. Housed in an old shoe factory, this popular downtown spot just reopened with a new menu of sandwiches, salads and steaks. Entrees from $12.95.
King's Island Chinese Restaurant, 2804 Old Forest Rd., 434-384-0066, http://www.kingsislandrestaurant.com. When many other places in town are closed on Sunday, this one's open and serving a popular buffet ($8.25). Entrees from $6.45.
WHAT TO DO
Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre, 4000 Candlers Mountain Rd., 866-504-7541, http://www.liberty.edu/snowflex. The country's first facility for snowboarding and skiing using the synthetic surface called Snowflex. General public pricing is $7 an hour ($5 non-peak), $12 to rent a ski or board set and $5 for a snow tube.

Percival's Island Natural Area, 1600 Concord Turnpike, 434-455-5858, http://www.lynchburgva.gov. A 1 1/2 -mile long island in the middle of the James River, with a paved walking and biking path.
