Allen leads Temple in win over Virginia Tech

Lavoy Allen scored 18 points to lead Temple to a 61-50 victory over Virginia Tech on Friday night in the final game of the Philly Hoop Group Classic tripleheader at the Palestra.

The Owls improved to 4-1 for the first time since the 2000-01 season. The Hokies fell to 3-1.

Allen, a junior forward, added 10 rebounds for Temple, which led 27-17 at halftime.

Malcom Delaney scored a game-high 32 points for the Hokies, making 9 of 21 from the field and all 11 free throws he attempted. Jeff Allen added six points and led Virginia Tech with nine rebounds.

Virginia women roll

Paulisha Kellum scored a career-high 25 points to help No. 15 Virginia beat South Dakota State, 78-66, at the Junkanoo Jam in Freeport, Bahamas.

All-American Monica Wright was held to just eight points, but moved into third place on Virginia's career scoring list as she passed current assistant coach Wendy Palmer.

Virginia (5-1) took an early 13-5 lead, but South Dakota State put together an 11-0 run to take a 16-13 lead with 12 minutes 46 seconds left in the first half. Another run by the Jackrabbits (2-4) gave them their biggest lead at 28-20 with 6:22 left.

Virginia fought back with a run of its own, however, and capped off an 11-1 run with a layup by Wright to recapture the lead at 31-29.

The Cavaliers led 39-34 at the half and the Jackrabbits could get no closer.

Kristin Rotert, Maria Boever and Steph Paluch each had 14 points for South Dakota State.

-- MICHIGAN STATE 78, GEORGE WASHINGTON 47: Jasmine Thomas scored nine of her 15 points during a decisive run in the second half to help the No. 25 Spartans at the Junkanoo Jam in Freeport, Bahamas.

Kalisha Keane added 13 points for Michigan State (3-2).
