Kvartunas, Dowd each finish ninth at Foot Locker South meet

West Springfield's Paige Kvartunas and Fairfax's Kevin Dowd, both seniors, each placed ninth at Saturday's Foot Locker South meet in Charlotte.

Kvartunas finished the five-kilometer girls' race in 17 minutes 22 seconds; Dowd finished the boys' in 14:54. A pair of Texans were the champions. Chelsey Sveinsson (16:53) won the girls' race, and Craig Lutz (14:34) captured the boys' title.

The top 10 from each region -- Northeast, Midwest, South and West -- qualify for the national championships in San Diego on Dec. 12. . . .

At the Northeast Region meet at Sunken Meadow State Park in New York, DeMatha senior Cory Puffett finished sixth in 16:06.

Whitman senior third

Whitman senior Andrew Palmer finished in the top five at the Nike Cross Nationals Southeast Region meet in Cary, N.C., and qualified for the national championships for the second straight year. Palmer was third in 15:21. Jamestown senior Colin Mearns won in 15:16.

In the girls' race, Wootton's Jessie Rubin and Mountain View's Kaitlyn Davis, both seniors, qualified for nationals. Rubin took seventh in 18:05, and Davis placed eighth in 18:06.

The top five individuals and top two teams from the region earned automatic berths to nationals in Portland, Ore., on Dec. 5.
