Florida State Coach Bobby Bowden told reporters Sunday he would like to return as head coach of the Seminoles next season. Bowden, 80, said he planned to meet with Florida State President T.K. Wetherell soon and hopes to have the issue resolved by the end of the week. His one-year contract expires in January.
"It doesn't take long to say yes or no," said Bowden, who trails only Penn State Coach Joe Paterno in career victories. "The only thing I can say is right now, sitting right here, I would like to come back. But I've got bosses. I've got people who have to approve it." . . .
Memphis hired Louisiana State running backs coach Larry Porter as its coach. Porter, known as one of the nation's top recruiters, replaces Tommy West, who was fired Nov. 9 after nine seasons. Memphis went 2-10. . . .
Marshall announced that Coach Mark Snyder agreed to resign. In five seasons under Snyder, Marshall went 21-37. An ESPN report, citing an unnamed source, stated that Snyder was fired. . . .
Eastern Illinois offensive line coach Jeff Hoover was killed in a car crash that happened as he returned home from Saturday's 48-7 loss to Southern Illinois in the division I-AA playoffs. Hoover's car apparently swerved to avoid a deer.
