The National Postal Museum has a new favorite philatelist. The Associated Press reported that California investor William H. Gross auctioned off two of his stamp collections last week to raise money for the museum. Sold at Spink Shreves Galleries, a stamp auction house in New York City, the collections snagged $3.2 million.

According to the Smithsonian Institution, Gross, who founded Pacific Investment Management Co. in California, has pledged $8 million to build a 12,000-square-foot gallery extension at street level near Union Station. The new gallery, which is scheduled to open in 2012, will house some of Gross's most special items, including four 1918 "Inverted Jennys," a 24-cent stamp of a flying Curtiss JN-4 biplane mistakenly printed with the plane upside down. In November 2007, an Inverted Jenny was auctioned for $977,500.

Governator's tax woes

The IRS continues prowling around celebrities for back taxes. The latest target? The governator himself. California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger owes Uncle Sam nearly $80,000 in back taxes from 2004 and 2005, according to TMZ.com.

At first the governor's office said it had no knowledge of the tax lien. "The Governor has paid his taxes in full and on time. No one, including the IRS, has notified the Governor of any issues whatsoever with his taxes." But after contacting the IRS, California officials acknowledged a filing error stemming from "a minor paperwork tracking discrepancy," the governor's office said Friday.

The governor will refile his return to clear up the matter.

End notes

Married: The third time is supposed to be the charm. But not for actor Tom Arnold, whose third marriage ended in divorce. Maybe he'll have better luck this time: People magazine says he married home organizer Ashley Groussman Saturday in Maui. Actor Dax Shepard was the best man.

The two met last year, and Arnold proposed during his 50th birthday party on March 6, with a ring designed by Groussman's sister.

Arnold divorced comedienne Roseanne Barr in 1994, stylist Julie Champnella in 1999 and political consultant Shelby Roos in 2008.

Separated: A source close to actors Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon leaked to People magazine that the couple have split. The two starred in the 2007 flick "Rendition" and had been rumored to be dating since then. Witherspoon married actor Ryan Phillippe in 1999. They separated in 2006, with the divorce finalized in 2008.
