An 85-year-old man walking on a darkened roadway in St. Mary's County was killed after being hit by a vehicle Monday night, state police said Tuesday.

The victim, identified as James T. Yorkshire of Mechanicsville, was wearing dark clothing during a light drizzle shortly before 9 p.m., according to state police.

As of Tuesday morning, authorities didn't know whether he was walking along Route 235 or trying to cross it, according to a news release. He was struck by a vehicle that was traveling north on Route 235, south of Valley Wood Court, in Mechanicsville.

Authorities found Yorkshire in the median. He died at the scene, state police said.

There is "no evidence to indicate that alcohol, drugs or excessive speed were factors in this accident," state police said.
