A 4-year-old boy was injured Tuesday afternoon in a hit-and-run crash in St. Mary's County, police said.

Police did not immediately release details about the boy's condition but said he was flown to Children's National Medical Center by a Maryland State Police helicopter. The boy was apparently struck just before 1:30 p.m. on Brighton Avenue in Lexington Park, police said.

Investigators are searching for a burgundy-colored vehicle with a driver between 30 and 40 years old. Anyone with information is asked to contact the St. Mary's County sheriff's office at 301-475-4040.
