One of the two suspects charged with carjacking the sport-utility vehicle of a Tennessee senator's daughter on Wednesday was wearing women's clothing when he was arrested in Seat Pleasant shortly after the incident, according to police charging documents made public Friday.
The two suspects, DeWalden E. Connor, 22, of Capitol Heights and Steven O. Alston, 25, of the 1700 block of Gales Street NE, will be extradited from Prince George's County to the District, officials with the U.S. attorney's office for the District said.
Connor and Alston each made a brief appearance Friday before District Court Judge John P. Morrissey in Upper Marlboro. They are both charged in Prince George's with unauthorized use of a vehicle (the carjacked SUV) and theft over $500. Morrissey ordered both suspects held on $75,000 bond. County prosecutors said District officials had placed a detainer on Connor and Alston, meaning that if they make bond, they will be turned over to D.C. authorities.
Police said Connor and Alston forced Julia Corker, 22, daughter of Sen. Bob Corker (R), out of her Chevrolet Tahoe as she was stopped at a red light at Seventh and D streets NW about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. Police said one suspect approached Corker to ask for directions. When she began giving directions, the other entered the passenger side and pulled her out of the SUV by her neck, police said. She suffered minor bruises.
Police tracked the vehicle by OnStar, an anti-theft system. About an hour after the carjacking, Seat Pleasant police saw the Tahoe parked in front of a Taco Bell on Central Avenue, near the Seat Pleasant police headquarters.
D.C. police brought Julia Corker to Seat Pleasant, where she identified Alston and Connor, according to the charging document.
According to court records, Connor has a pending case on charges of soliciting an undercover police officer in October in the 600 block of New York Ave NE. Connor was dressed as a woman and went by the name of Gabrielle when he approached a male officer, the court papers said. Connor was awaiting placement in a court-ordered diversion program, the records show.
Alston is on probation after a 2006 conviction for unauthorized use of a vehicle and possession of marijuana.
