A pregnant woman was cut and critically injured Sunday morning after she was apparently held against her will inside a Suitland apartment, authorities said.

Just before 9 a.m., a man called 911 to report that another man with a knife was chasing a pregnant woman in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 3500 block of Silver Park Drive, authorities said. When officers arrived, the woman had been cut and was bleeding, and the assailant had fled, authorities said.

The woman was taken to a hospital, where she remained in critical condition after surgery Sunday afternoon, said Officer Evan Baxter, a Prince George's County police spokesman. Baxter said the woman was in the third trimester of her pregnancy. It was unclear where her injuries were.

Baxter said investigators believed that the attack was a "targeted situation." He said the woman was hanging out with another woman and a man inside an apartment in the complex when "at some point something went wrong."

"They're investigating where things went sour with this situation," Baxter said. "She was there willingly with them at one point, and [investigators] believe that may have changed. . . . Somewhere along the line there, they ended up cutting her."

Baxter said he did not know the relationship between the victim and suspects, who remain at large. Officers have identified several people of interest and found a Chevrolet Impala that might have been used as a getaway car, he said.

The incident shook neighbors in the apartment complex of low-rise, garden-style buildings. As they dug out their cars from piles of snow Sunday, many said they worried that the incident was an indication that their once-quiet community was becoming more violent.

"Normally, we don't have stuff like that around here," said Katrice Smith, 34. "I think that it's crazy."
