A wacko assignment

"Whack. The ax blade flies off its wooden handle" ["The $700 billion man," front page, Dec. 6].

I sincerely hope that Post photographer Linda Davidson, who took the front-page picture of Neel Kashkari wielding the ax, survived her assignment.

Awaiting the coming of Santa?

I found offensive the Dec. 4 Weekend calendar of "Holiday Happenings," appropriating the Christian Advent season as if it were just part and parcel of the secular holiday.

I understand that for the sake of political correctness we are not supposed to name the Christian festival, but that Santa's workshop should be rubbing shoulders with Handel's "Messiah" in a pseudo-Advent calendar is rather hard to take. I think you can be fairly sure that the Christians who began the tradition were not so much waiting for breakfast with Santa Claus as for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.
