Laura M. Farrell, 28, owns a decorative painting firm. Johnathon Smith, 31, is a computer engineer at the Pentagon. They live in Mitchellville.

Wedding date: Nov. 21.

Location: Weinberg Center for the Arts and the Holiday Inn, both in Frederick.

Guests: 130.

How they met: In 2007, Laura and Johnathon attended a birthday party for a mutual friend in the District. They spent all evening chatting. Laura had just gotten out of a relationship so she mostly talked about her ex-boyfriend, she admits. But it didn't put off Johnathon, who offered to drive her home and called her a week later.

The proposal: The two vacationed a year ago in Jamaica, where Johnathon planned a private beach dinner. He wanted to propose after dessert, but the waitress was taking too long. He grew impatient and handed Laura a box with the ring so Laura knew the question was coming. However, Johnathon then saw the waitress approaching with dessert and took the box back.

The wedding: Johnathon wanted the event to have a 1920s New York meets New Orleans feel. They had the reception indoors, where the room felt like an outside courtyard, complete with street lamps. For the wedding, Laura's mom saw photos from a 1980s Weinberg Center wedding and suggested they look into the theater. From there, it took Laura and Johnathon seven months to create invitations, movie posters, life-size carnival cutouts and other decorations for the wedding and reception.

Honeymoon: Snorkeled in Negril, Jamaica.
