House proposes changes for health task force

Under both health-care bills pending in the Senate and House, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommendations would play an important role in determining basic health insurance coverage. The House bill would also make a variety of other changes to the panel, including:

-- Increasing the task force's size from 16 to 30 members.

-- Establishing criteria for membership.

-- Requiring the task force to consider racial, ethnic and other health disparities in making its recommendations.

-- Requiring task force to consult with a new stakeholders board.

-- Requiring that activities of the task force be conducted in an open and transparent manner in accordance with federal law.
