A woman died Monday night after being found unconscious in a burning and apparently vacant rowhouse in Northwest Washington, authorities said.

The woman, who appeared to be about 45, was found around 9 p.m. in the basement of a boarded-up rowhouse in the 900 block of Kennedy Street NW, in the Brightwood/Brightwood Park area. She was not identified immediately, and it was not clear what she was doing in the house. She was not breathing when found , authorities said.

Firefighters removed boards to enter the house, said fire department spokesman Pete Piringer. Damage was described as substantial and the cause of the fire was under investigation.
