Putting a moniker on the decade

Wednesday, December 30, 2009

Regarding the Dec. 27 Style article "21st century's first decade is slipping away without leaving its name":

Name the outgoing decade "The Oohs." Decades usually ooze seamlessly from one to the next. But when the "o-dometer" rolled over to 2000, 9/11, Iraq, Katrina, recession and President Obama gave us 10 years of oohs and aahs -- putting us on tenterhooks for the '10s: "the Tense."

Hank Wallace, Washington

How about calling this decade, from 2000 to 2009, "the Sweet Nothings"? It might not be the best, but at least it's something.

Dan Adams, Big Cove Tannery, Pa.

A name for 2000-2009 could be "The Double-O Decade." Years in which the two middle figures are zeros will not occur again for nearly 1,000 years.

Louis Cerny, Gaithersburg
