Dismissal of Blackwater charges: Was justice done?

Wednesday, January 6, 2010

Regarding the Jan. 1 and Jan. 2 front-page articles "Charges against 5 Blackwater guards dismissed" and "Day of mixed emotions in Baghdad":

I understand the fury of Iraqis better than I do the U.S. judge's attitude. According to The Post, Judge Ricardo M. Urbina "sharply criticized" prosecutors but apparently had nothing to say about the actions of the defendants. Maybe someone did fire first from the crowd, but that surely did not justify shooting indiscriminately at innocent bystanders.

The ruling may be legally correct, but it's a disappointment to those who think the courts exist to dispense justice.
