D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty announced Monday night that Marc A. Schindler, chief of staff at the city's Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services, will become interim director of the agency at the end of the month.

Schindler will take over for Vincent N. Schiraldi, who has led the department for five years. Schiraldi was appointed in November to lead New York City's probation agency.

Schiraldi, a trained social worker and a longtime youth advocate, was recruited by the administration of former mayor Anthony A. Williams (D) to remake the District's juvenile justice system, and he was kept on after Fenty (D) was elected in 2006.

Schindler was the general counsel at DYRS before becoming chief of staff in 2006. Before joining the agency, he was a lawyer at the Youth Law Center, a public interest civil rights firm.
