Major track work on Metro's Red Line will close the Grosvenor-Strathmore Station this holiday weekend from 10 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Tuesday.

Free shuttle buses will carry passengers between the White Flint and Medical Center stations while the Grosvenor station is closed, splitting the Red Line into two sections. The disruption will add an estimated 40 minutes to Red Line trips that pass through the work zone, according to Metro.

Metro decided to close the station so it could do extensive track work during a concentrated period. The work is part of a multiyear project to rebuild the Red Line through 2013. During the weekend, workers will install 1,400 feet of rail and hundreds of ties, track fasteners and tunnel lights. They will also upgrade track circuits and repair scores of water leaks.

Red Line schedules will change because of the work, with the last Red Line train departing Shady Grove for White Flint 30 minutes earlier than usual to give riders time to connect to shuttle buses.

Metro announced the following details on last trains:

Friday and Saturday, the last Red Line train is scheduled to depart Shady Grove at 2 a.m., Rockville at 2:04 a.m. and Twinbrook at 2:07 a.m., arriving at White Flint at 2:09 a.m. The last train is scheduled to depart Medical Center at 2:45 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

Sunday and Monday, the last Red Line train is scheduled to depart Shady Grove at 11 p.m., Rockville at 11:04 p.m. and Twinbrook at 11:07 p.m., arriving at White Flint at 11:09 p.m. The last train is scheduled to depart Medical Center at 11:45 p.m. Sunday and Monday.

Red Line trains will run every six minutes during the day Saturday and every eight minutes Sunday and Monday. After 9:30 p.m., trains will run every 15 minutes.

The free shuttle buses between White Flint and Medical Center will operate every six to eight minutes during the day and every 15 minutes after 9:30 p.m. throughout the weekend.

Metro advised customers to dress warmly if they plan to wait for shuttle buses, which will pick up passengers at the following locations:

-- Medical Center: bus bay F.

-- Grosvenor-Strathmore: bus bay C to White Flint, bus bay D to Medical Center.

-- White Flint: Marinelli Road in front of the station.

Although the Grosvenor-Strathmore Station will be closed, the parking facility will remain open. Parking is free at Metro stations on weekends and federal holidays.
