Ride, acceleration and handling: The Crosstour rides much like the Accord from which it comes -- comfortable, reasonably pleasant on long drives. Acceleration and handling won't disappoint people who, say, normally drive Accord or Toyota Camry sedans. The ZDX's plush appointments turn a "pleasant" ride to spa-like coddling. Acceleration is excellent. Handling is good.
Head-turning quotient: Never, ever discuss the styling of the Crosstour or ZDX at a gathering of friends you want to remain friendly.
Body style/layout: Both the Crosstour and ZDX are front-engine, mid-size crossovers largely based on the Accord sedan. They afford a bit more utility than sedans. The Crosstour can be had with front- or all-wheel -drive. The ZDX has all-wheel drive.
Engines/transmissions: In the Crosstour, you get a 3.5-liter, 24-valve V-6 that develops 271 horsepower at 6,200 revolutions per minute and 254 foot-pounds of torque at 5,000 rpm. The engine is linked to a five-speed automatic transmission. The Acura ZDX has a standard 3.7-liter, 24-valve V-6 that develops 300 hp horsepower at 6,300 rpm and 270 ft-lbs of torque at 4,500 rpm. It is linked to a six-speed auto-manual.
Capacities: Both have seats for five people, but the interior configuration of the Crosstour allows for comfortable seating for four adults. And the ZDX really provides comfortable seating for only two adults on long drives.
Crosstour's specification sheet says it has a maximum 51.3 cubic feet of cargo space. The ZDX boasts 56 cubic feet, which is an exaggeration.
Fuel capacity in the Crosstour is 18.5 gallons of regular gasoline. ZDX fuel capacity is 21 gallons of required premium gasoline.
Mileage: In real-world testing, both vehicles averaged in the neighborhood of 17 mpg city and 24 highway.
Safety: Honda has excellent safety engineering for all of its vehicles. Side and head air bags, electronic traction and stability control, antilock brakes and four-wheel disc brakes are standard on both the Crosstour and ZDX.
Prices: Base prices on the Honda Crosstour range from $29,670 to $36,220. Add a $710 transportation charge. Base prices on the Acura ZDX go from $45,495 to $56,045. The additional transportation charge is $810. Prices are sourced from Honda and Honda's Acura division.
