The Republican Party has selected new Virginia governor Robert F. McDonnell to deliver the response to President Obama's State of the Union address later this month.

McDonnell is seen as a symbol of the national resurgence the party is experiencing following years of Democratic gains and President Obama's easy win in November 2008. The Virginia governor has been mentioned by some as a potential future presidential candidate.

Full text of the press release from the governor's office:

Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell will deliver the Republican Address to the Nation, immediately following the President's State of the Union Address. McDonnell is delivering the Address at the invitation of Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (KY) and House Republican Leader John Boehner (OH). The Address will take place on the evening of Wednesday January 27th. Further details regarding location, coverage and exact time will be released in the days ahead.
