Wedding stories: Irma Esparza and Kenny Diggs
Irma Esparza, 36, is chief of staff for a D.C. Council member. Kenny Diggs, 37, is a political campaign manager. The couple live in Washington.
Wedding date: Jan. 8.
Location: Arlington County Circuit Court.
How they met: In 1993, Kenny and Irma were rival colleagues working on commission at a clothing store in Union Station. They were both college students who needed extra cash, so they battled constantly for sales.
The proposal: Before a trip to Miami in 2006, Irma had an inkling Kenny would pop the question. She got a bracelet from Tiffany & Co. engraved with "Will you marry me?" so they could simultaneously ask each other. Irma carried the bracelet everywhere during the trip but Kenny never asked. When they returned home, Irma turned on the TV and stumbled upon "Elimidate," a TV dating show. Kenny proposed while she watched the show, saying he wanted to catch her at an unexpected moment. Irma teases him about it now; he finally bit the bullet, she says, because he though he was about to be eliminated.
The wedding: With home renovations zapping savings and work getting in the way, the event was constantly on the back burner, Irma says. On the morning of Kenny's birthday, she wanted to do something special, so she suggested applying for their marriage license. Kenny replied, "Why don't we just get married instead?" Irma hesitated for a moment but then was game.
Honeymoon: Lobster/clam bake with friends and family on the beach in Marco Island, Fla.
