A 9-month-old baby was killed in Fairfax County in September, police revealed this week, and his father has been indicted on murder charges.

Fairfax police said the baby, Dylan M. Price, lived in the 9800 block of Spillway Court in the Burke area. On Sept. 22, police were summoned to the house because the boy was unresponsive. The baby was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police spokeswoman Mary Ann Jennings said.

Police didn't publicly disclose the killing because they were awaiting medical findings about the cause of the baby's death, Jennings said. The state medical examiner classified Dylan's death as a homicide Dec. 18, she said. The death was not reported then, either.

Sources familiar with the case said police think Dylan was shaken; Jennings could not confirm that.

The case was uncovered when a Fairfax grand jury indicted Dylan's father, Herbert M. Price Jr., this week, and the indictment was announced in Circuit Court on Wednesday. Price, 29, was not at the county's monthly "term day," at which indictments are unsealed and court dates scheduled. Lawyers in the courtroom said a warrant was issued for his arrest.

The disclosure of Dylan's death makes his the second homicide in Fairfax from 2009 to be revealed this month. Also this month, Fairfax police declared that the October shooting of Karen Deck in Reston was a homicide. According to court records, Deck's boyfriend said he accidentally shot her. No charges have been filed in the case.

The Fairfax homicide total for 2009 is 14.
