MARYLAND

Elderly woman fatally struck

An elderly woman was fatally injured Saturday evening after she was hit by an automobile in the Wheaton area of Montgomery County, county police said.

The woman was hit about 6:05 p.m. as she tried to cross Georgia Avenue near Shorefield Road, police said.

She had gotten across two of the southbound lanes but was struck in the lane nearest the median, according to police.

Police said they had not been able to identify her and gave this description:

She was white, about 4 feet 10, and wore a maroon jacket, a white and red striped vest, a dark blue scarf, purple sweat pants and black leather Dr. Scholl's shoes.

She wore a yellow ring on her left ring finger that might be a wedding band, police said. They added that a pair of prescription glasses, possibly hers, was found nearby.

Police asked anyone who might know her identity to call 301-279-8000. Witnesses are asked to call the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 301-840-2435.
