Obama 2011 budget request: Consumer Product Safety Commission

The Consumer Product Safety Commission would see a slight increase in its budget, going from $118 million to $119 million. The agency, which oversees the safety of thousands of consumer products from lawn mowers to cribs, would hire about 50 additional employees, bringing its number of full-time staff to 576. Many of the new hires would be inspectors dispatched to U.S. ports and overseas.

The proposed budget builds on recent increases in funding for the commission, which received $80 million in 2008. That year, Congress passed the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, which authorized funding for the agency to increase to $136 million by fiscal 2014.
