The heat is on

Only one of the panelists in Jan. 19 "Planet Panel" was a scientist: Donald Boesch is a professor of marine science. The other, Ben Lieberman, trained as a lawyer and accountant. Your paper allowed Lieberman to claim something that is contradicted by most real evidence: that there has been a "decade-long period of no additional warming."

That's nonsense! The World Meteorological Organization and the U.S. government's chief climate agency, NOAA, both say that the past decade was the hottest on record.

No doubt about it

Although the Jan. 19 Green Lantern column ["When in doubt, throw it out"] was informative, it presented short-sighted advice, stating that when in doubt if an item is recyclable, a person should throw it out. In fact, when in doubt, your county's or city's Web site usually provides the answer as to whether an item can be recycled. Howard County's Web site provides very detailed information about what I can recycle. And if I am still in doubt, Howard County provides an e-mail address and phone number for further clarification. Montgomery and Anne Arundel counties and Washington, D.C., also provide detailed recycling information on their respective Web sites. Therefore, when in doubt, do not throw it out, check the Web site!
