The work

The Rosslyn and Arlington Cemetery stations will be closed throughout the long weekend while rail switches are installed at Rosslyn. In addition, several hundred feet of rail will be replaced, along with 300 track fasteners and 300 anchor bolts. Water leaks in the tunnel will be fixed. More than 500 tunnel lights will be installed and third-rail insulators and cover boards will be cleaned.

On Saturday morning, Metro, Arlington County and the District will conduct an emergency drill in the closed station.

Rosslyn is the point on the Virginia side of the Potomac River where two lines -- the Blue and the Orange -- enter a tunnel to cross under the river. The only other Metrorail connection between Virginia and the District is the Yellow Line bridge.

-- From 10 p.m. Friday through the train system's midnight closing on Presidents' Day, the Rosslyn and Arlington Cemetery stations will be shut down for the track and tunnel work at Rosslyn. That splits both the Blue and Orange lines in two.

-- The Blue Line will not operate between Pentagon and Foggy Bottom.

-- The Orange Line will not operate between Court House and Foggy Bottom.

-- During the work, all Blue and Orange Line trains will operate every 12 to 15 minutes during the day and every 20 minutes after 9:30 p.m.

-- Free shuttle buses will get rail passengers from one open portion of the line to the next so they can continue their trips.

Friday night schedules

The last trains will operate through Rosslyn before 10 p.m. Friday, because Metro needs time to remove power from both tracks and to assemble maintenance crews in the designated work zones.

Orange Line: The last New Carrollton-bound train through the Rosslyn Metrorail station will leave Vienna at 9:28 p.m., depart Rosslyn at 9:50 p.m. and arrive at New Carrollton at 10:25 p.m. The last Vienna-bound train through Rosslyn will leave New Carrollton at 9:18 p.m., depart Rosslyn at 9:53 p.m. and arrive at Vienna at 10:15 p.m.

Blue Line: The last Largo-bound train through Rosslyn on Friday night will leave the Franconia-Springfield Metrorail station at 9:32 p.m., depart Rosslyn at 10 p.m. and arrive at Largo Town Center at 10:36 p.m. The last Franconia-Springfield bound train through Rosslyn will leave Largo Town Center at 9:22 p.m., depart Rosslyn at 9:58 p.m. and arrive at Franconia-Springfield at 10:26 p.m.

Last Train Departures

Friday through Presidents' Day, the last Blue and Orange Line trains from Franconia-Springfield and Vienna for the Pentagon and Court House Metrorail station will leave 30 minutes earlier than the last trains normally leave. They'll do this so riders can connect to the shuttle buses and then to the last trains leaving Foggy Bottom for Largo Town Center and for New Carrollton.
