The Office of Personnel Management redirected visitors to its Web site for a time Monday to cope with a crush of traffic from those curious about whether the government would be open Tuesday.

Those headed to www.opm.gov were redirected to www.data.gov/opm_status.html, a site that operates on more robust servers. The switch was noticed by some, triggering some doubts about whether the information -- offices would close -- was legitimate.

OPM.gov had more than 6.1 million total page views between 3:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. Monday, according to federal Chief Information Officer Vivek Kundra. That's up considerably from the approximately 151,000 total page views on a normal day, he said in an e-mail.
