Maj. Grabowski, a Germantown resident, served 20 years in the Army, mostly in public affairs assignments, before retiring in 1984. His final active-duty assignment was at Fort Hood, Tex., as a public affairs officer. His decorations included the Bronze Star Medal.

John Edward Grabowski was born in the Bronx, N.Y., and spent his high school years in Rockville.

He was a 1959 graduate of Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville and a 1963 graduate of what is now McDaniel College in Westminster, Md. He received a master's degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Pittsburgh in 1972.

He was a member of two boating groups, the Rockville Sail and Power Squadron and the Chesapeake Mainship Group.

His marriage to Lu Woody Grabowski ended in divorce.

Survivors include his wife, Jenny Norris of Germantown; four children from the first marriage, Cathy Grabowski of Bryan, Tex., John A. Grabowski of Fort Wayne, Ind., Diane Longenecker of Austin and Bobby Grabowski of College Station, Tex.; a brother, George Grabowski of Jefferson, Md.; and four grandchildren.

Donald N. Hayes Municipal Bond Expert

Donald N. Hayes, 78, who retired in the late 1990s as vice president of the municipal bond department of the Folger Nolan Fleming Douglas investment firm in Washington, died Feb. 3 at his home in Silver Spring. He had congestive heart failure.

Mr. Hayes spent more than 15 years with Folger Nolan Fleming Douglas. Before that, he was a bank teller at Washington banks.

Donald Norris Hayes was a native Washingtonian and a graduate of Oxon Hill High School. He attended Columbia Union College, a Seventh-day Adventist school in Takoma Park.

He was a member of the Waldorf Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Margaret Hall Hayes of Silver Spring; three children, Pamela Tarman of La Plata, Timothy Hayes of Lugoff, S.C., and Daniel Hayes of Silver Spring; two grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.
